What is the bright star next to the moon in the sky recently?
I am in Birmingham UK, for the past week or so I have noticed a bright constant star close to the moon as the moon becomes full. What is this star? Is is a planet? Can any stargazer help me learn more about the object of my fascination? By the stars-I beseech you!
Jupiter; the fact that you saw it as 'constant' helps to identify it as a planet, as stars twinkle. Remember that Venus is nearer the sun than Earth is. This means that we either don't see it at all because we are looking toward the sun's brightness, or we see it only near the horizon after sunset ('Evening Star') or before sunrise ('Morning Star'). So, it is never seen high in the sky, never seen in the dark of night.
What is that very bright star just after sunset to the southeast?
Hi I live in western Canada, to be more specific Vancouver. And around 6pm pacific time (just after sunset) there is this lone star that is extremely bright to the southeastern part of the sky. Does anybody know which star that is? or if its a planet? Today's date is February 12th if that helps.
Venus is extremely bright these days, but it appears in the southwest, near the setting sun. It could not possibly be in the southeast just after sunset.
What is the bright star below the moon that has been out lately?
There has been a really bright star out lately and I would like to know what that is? Is it a planet? If so which one?
I saw that last night as well and wondered the same thing. I just checked the Adler Planetarium here in Chicago and their web site says it was Venus! http://www.adlerplanetarium.org/cyberspace/index.php
